WILSON MALACHI CAPPS. Born in Weakley county more than threequarters of a century ago,
Mr. Capps was at one time a schoolmaster, and largely from the means derived from this occupation
and his manual labor he got his start in the world. For thirty years or more he has been considered
one of the most successful farmers and business men of this county, and is the leading citizen of
the little village of Kimery.Wilson Malachi Capps was born near the present site of Sharon, in
Weakley County, September 13, 1837, a son of Wilson Capps, who was born in Currituck county,
North Carolina, and a grandson of a sailor, who was lost at sea, and left a widow with four children,
named Lydia, Wilson, Moses and Dennie. Wilson Capps, the father, was a child at the death of his
father and he remained on the farm with his widowed mother and was reared and married in his
native county. About 1836 he came to Tennessee, bringing his wife and two children. They made
the journey overland with teams and wagons, brought their household goods and camped along
the roads, after several weeks of journeying landing in Weakley county. There the father bought a
tract of land, including the present site of Sharon, but the entire region at that time was very sparsely
settled, there were no railroads, and few wagon roads had been cut through the forest. The father
built a log house close to the limits of the present town of Sharon. He had no iron nails and therefore
resorted to wooden pins and tongue and groove construction to hold the timbers together. He split
shakes to cover the roof and these were held down by weight poles. He also split and hewed
puncheons for the floor and made chimneys of mud and sticks. The mother in the early days did all
the cooking by the fireplace, and she was well versed in the pioneer arts of carding, spinning and
weaving, so that the entire family were dressed in the homespun of that period. The father improved
a large amount of land and lived upon it until 1854, in which year he sold and moved to Sevier county,
Arkansas. After a few years he went to Polk county in the same state, which was his place of residence
until his death at the age of about seventy years. The maiden name of his wife was Lydia Jones. She
was born in North Carolina and died in Weakley county before her husband's removal to Arkansas.
Her six children were named Cynthia, Daisy, Willis M., Emerson, Thomas and Mary. The father was
married a second time and had four children by that Union. Wilson M. Capps was reared amid the
pioneer scenes which have just been described in Weakley county. As a boy he saw little of the
facilities of modern civilization, and he was nearly grown before the first railroad was built through
this part of Tennessee. The people of Weakley county in the early days took their surplus products
to Hickman and Paducah, in Kentucky, transporting them with wagons and teams. He attended school
taught in a log cabin and the building had no windows, a log being left out at one side in order to
admit sufficient light. A fireplace heated the building and the benches were made of split logs, with
wooden pins inserted underneath to support them. These benches had no desks in front of them,
and the only desk was a broad slab along the side of the wall. In spite of these primitive facilities, he
made the best of his opportunities and qualified himself for teaching before he was twenty years old.
At the outbreak of the war he was attending a school in Obion county. The Federal troops, when
they occupied that section of the state, requested him to assist inrepairing a railroad which the
Confederates had torn up, but he refused and soon returned to Weakley county. He applied to
Hiram Hatcher for board while he attended school, and at the end of three months got his money
as pay for teaching and offered Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher a share of it for keeping him, but they refused
to accept a cent. After that he boarded with Mrs. Fannie Brock for three years and continued his work
as teacher. Later he commenced farming on rented land and soon afterwards bought one hundred
acres at the present site of Kimery, about five miles northwest of Greenfield. He was successful from
the start as a farmer and as his means increased he bought other land, and is now the owner of
upwards of six hundred acres. In 1900 Mr. Capps engaged in merchandising at Kimery, where he
carries a stock of general merchandise, including almost every article needed by the people of this
community. Some years ago he built a commodious frame house on a most pleasant location at Kimery.
About the house is a large lawn and yard filled with plants, shrubs and ornamental trees, and the
surroundings make it one of the most delightful home places in this vicinity

Mr. Capps was married in 1865 to Miss Mary C. Kemp, who was born in Weakley county, Tennessee.
Her father, Asbury Kemp, was born in Currituck county, North Carolina. Her grandparents migrated to
Tennessee with teams and wagons in the early days, settling in Weakley county, where the grandfather
bought a tract of timber land four miles northwest of Greenfield, built a log home in the wilderness, and
continued his labors in clearing and developing the farm until his death. The grandmother survived him a
number of years. The nine children in the grandparents' family were Silas, Edmond, Asbury, Nelson, Cain,
Bettsy, Polly, Rena and Caroline. Asbury Kemp, the father of Mrs. Capps, was but a boy when he came to
Tennessee with his parents, and later bought a tract of land and began his independent experience as a
farmer. His home was five miles from Greenfield, and on the place a small plat had been cleared and a log
cabin erected. He built a threeroom log house with a brick chimney and a large fireplace, and the mother
of Mrs. Capps for several years cooked at this hearth. Then they bought a stove, which is said to have
been the second household utensil of that description ever brought into the community. That occurred
about 1851. Mrs. Capp's father died in 1861 at the age of forty-eight. His wife's maiden name was Elizabeth
Ward, a daughter of Henry and Polly Ward. She died also at the age of forty-eight, and her three children
were Marion, Mary Caroline and Amanda Ellen. The eight sons of Mr. and Mrs. Capps are mentioned as
follows: Almus A., Mallie, James M., Johnnie, Aleck, Claude, Gentry and Kemp. Almus married Mary Ross
and has one son, Ross. Mallie married Emma Vaden and their four children are Fred, Brooxie, Wilsie and
Johnnie. JamesM. married Eura Hodge. Johnnie married for his first wife Ivy Baker, vol. vn— 22who had
one son, Joe Terry, and for his second wife Annie Oden, and by her has a daughter, Marian. Aleck married
Lizzie Overton and their five children are named Thelon, Iva May, Annis, Laura and Blueford Wilson. Claude
married Ruby Waterfield. Gentry married Lena Nelsen. The family of Mr. Capps were Methodists in religion,
but he and his wife affiliate with the Presbyterian church
